Out and About

If you can Tear yourself away from the Farm there is plenty to do in the Area

Out and About

Whats Out and About when you are at Drovers Rest. If you can tear yourself away from the farm…. Zip down the road to Hay-on-Wye, an attractive riverside market town where winding streets are lined with old stone buildings. For every stone you’re likely to find a different book!  In between the shops are some top quality eateries tucked away. Hay is world re-known for it’s annual book festival held for 10 days around the 26th of May when our little town heaves! It’s thriving shops and antique stores, wonderful restaurants & bars that will rival London for it’s foodiness, a real treasure trove of local crafts and ofcourse all the wild adventure that being in the Brecon Beacons and on the River Wye brings.

Limited time let us help you.

Top 10 things to do

  1. Taste the local sheep’s milk ice-cream from Shepherds in the heart of town.
  2. Walk up Hay Bluff or Sir Hereford’s Knob (yes it is called that!) & enjoy the magical views.
  3. Wander through Hay on wye. Visit the book-stores, there are over 30! Our favourites are Booths! and Addyman’s. Visit the antique shops in Hay, The Old Electric shop, owned by our friend Hannah, is a must for its vintage treasures & wonderful cafe. They also run cocktail bars every now & then, so be sure to look out for the next one.
  4. Visit the farmer’s market on a Thursday in the town centre. Lovely fresh local produce. Try the soup from Hay Broth, Alex Gooch’s sourdough bread, Bill’s Falafels or the yummy apple juice also stocked in our farmshop.
  5. The area is known for its food produce. Try the local craft beer with our friends Emily & Rob at Beer Revolution.  Taste the local cider and Dorstone cheese (My favourite is Dunkertons Cider and Neals Yard Creamery (owned by Parents from our kid’s school & we love how they named one of their cheeses after their son Finn!) or Treat yourself to a bottle of Chase Vodka, all available from the Hay Deli – you can visit Dunkertons for a tour & buy a case of cider to take back!)
  6. Paddle at the Warren on a hot day or Amble down the River Wye in a canoe. Our friends Claire and Aubrey at Wanttocanoe take kids from 4 years old and will give you a discount if you mention us. Our friends at Wyevalleycanoes at Glasbury means you can have a lovely lunch at their River Cafe after or before.
  7. Try your hand at climbing, Black Mountain Activities or a bit further Llangorse Activity Centre offer Gorge walking too.
  8. Ride a Horse in the Brecon Beacons try our friends Paul and Emily at transwalestrails for magical rides if you are experienced or Tregoyd or Bryngwyn if you are not.
  9. Take a ride on the Brecon Mountain Steam Train and then drive through the mountains to Cardiff – beautiful . The four waterfall walk, Pen Y Fan Walk, Dan y Gof (dinosaur caves) is all en route so choose what to do and make a day of it.
  10. Eat at the wonderful eateries that surround you – our favourites in Hay are The Old Electric Shop, The Granary, The Globe, The Blue Boar, St Johns Place, Booths Cafe, The Tapas Bar, Beer Revolution. Further afield but still fairly close by River Cafe, Foyles, The Griffin, The Stag, The Bridge Inn,  Castle Fields, The Pandy, The Walnut
